Default Trackback Spam

I just had to change blog script because the script that I was using had very poor handling of trackbacks, and I got sick of cleaning out the spam.

I really don't understand why people do it. Do the search engines actually give any value to trackback spammed links? I always assumed that the algorythms were sophisticated enough that the same link text showing over thousands of pages - most of them dead ones that have thousands of other spammed links on there, would be rated very lowly?
