Here are some tips to increase ur ranking in Google

1. Backinks to sites with Page Ranking
2. Original Content
3. Sitemap submission
4. No Broken Links

Google does supposedly have a penalty in place for duplicate content - if you think about it, then it does make sense to prioritise the sites with original content over the copy & pasted press releases or clone sites.

Yea they do, you can get banned for duplicate content.

but I have seen 1000s (literally) with duplicate content...none of them are banned....Google cant track 10000 crore site man!! ne can create a blog n make duplicate posts!! its nt at all difficult...

Well the basic concept is Links on similar sites. The more links on related content sites you have the better it is. Yes I know you must be think about non related content link exchange, in the eyes of google they are artifical link exchanges even if they are not. Its like a Soccer love will post Soccer links on his site and not Egg selling site link. Yes, non related content links do help in Page Ranking. But their strength decreases.

Also you have to make sure to use good keywords in your meta tags and arrange them properly.
