I do not understand how you earn credit from adsense. Can somebody explain to me how it works?

You run AdSense ads on your website and every time someone visits a page on your website with an ad, you'll earn some impressions, which earns money.
Every time someone clicks your ads, you get money.

How many page impressions does it take to earn money? I have had some days where I get thousands of impressions but earn maybe a penny. Then some days where I do and earn nothing.

Rates change as much as the ads do. What earns you a dollar today may earn you fifteen dollars tomorrow. It varies.

I agree. If it was constant then publishers would stick to the same set of keywords even if that meant researching a new niche they are totally unfamiliar with. If that was so, other markets would suffer and Google wouldn't make as much money on adwords through other keywords that weren't considered high paying.Hence, the juggling around with the cpc of keywords.
