Why do you think advertising on Y! groups is bad? What sort of advertising you are talking about?

I think MySpace bulletin has been my worst marketing attempt. I recieved less then 1/10.000 visit from it.

Using black hat techniques is of course very bad way of marketing. Also if you advertise on a link farm, it give no fruit. Traffic exchanges are also top on bad marketing idea list.
