What is the best forums software?
What is the best forums software?
OK I know that this question has been asked a million times. I have even asked it myself many times on many sites. However I would like this thread to be different. This is not a vote. I do not want to hear one line answers. I would like to hear details of why you think one is better than the next.
I personally have had most of my experience with phpbb and I am not too experienced with other forum platforms. I really like phpbb, but I don't really have anything to compare it to. I do know that it takes a lot of work to get phpbb modded and search engine friendly. Do other boards require this much work? Is phpbb easy compared to other forums, hard compared to other forums?
Overall I am impressed with phpbb but I would like to hear other peoples opinions...

if you are looking for paid version, then go to Vbulletin, this is the best forum software you could have.
but looking into free version, smf is the choice for me. modification are easy.

I am quite the same as you. I have used phpbb quite a lot, and very rarely used the others. I know the others are good, but that's the thing, phpbb is free. Then that's the thing, does vB and the other paid forums really make your job easier as an owner of a forum? I'm not sure if it does or not, but vB offers better security and more customization. A lot of the mods that are similar to phpbb, like shop mods for instance, seem to be better on vB forums. So I think they offer more to what the capabilities are, but easier to run? I don't think it would be.

Not that I couldn't go figure this out myself, but this seems like a good place to ask. What is the cost for VB? What about other forum platforms?

I'm pretty sure the cost of vB for life is US$160. Per year, I think it is around $60-80. I'm not 100% sure, but I think it's somewhere around that.
As with the other forum platforms, they are all cheaper of course, but I don't know exactly how much they cost.

I'm not sure what the best is, Suppose that can be debated and its more of a preference, my favorite is phpbb, works fine for me.
