Have you ever submitted to a directory (free or pay) that has hurt your raking or oter ways that you wish you didn't submit to that directory?

Nope. I like anything that gives me a backlink. I don't see how any could really hurt you.

Except in extreme examples, links can only help you. If they could hurt you your competitors could easily bring you down. The search engines realize this. Instead of penalizing you they just don't count links in bad neighborhoods. If the overwhelming pattern is bad links then you might start to see your rankings drop.
