I was just wondering if how can a directory earn a lot of money if it offers free submissions and very cheap featured links. Also, featured links are not that often bought.

If you have a free directory, you should use some PPC ads like adsense, revenue do come most of the times. You can also sell expensive sitewide links because traffic is generally more on free directories. Another option is featured links.

You can make money from a free directory by selling sitewides and also by selling advertisements . Directories dont make much money by adsense and all so basically , they make money by selling advertisement and sitewide links .

The benefit of a free directory is that they are easy to generate strong traffic with. The challenge comes with monetizing that traffic. I would not sell featured links cheap. If you maintain a quality directory serious webmasters will be willing to pay the money for featured links.
