I don't get why directories are so popular. What would be the point of visiting one of these?

I used to think the same way but why would you visit a teen site or an Search Engine Optimization site, etc.? To find what you're looking for, right? A directory helps people navigate through things they're looking for,

It is very difficult to find a needle inside a hay stack. This is true for finding the right site with the right information in the internet. Directories whether huge or small can be help in finding that ever elusive site.

The only bad thing about directories is that you usually have to wait for the webmaster himself to submit his site, that's if he actually wants to submit.

I don't visit directories, I prefer to search the websites I'm looking for using search engines, it's faster.
I also want to know why they are so popular if many people prefer to use search engines.

You have to know that the directories are useful to search through the sites or place we are looking for.So the people opt for looking the directories which makes their search easier.They will use directories as it is a great way to build more links and also to increase your site?s SERPs.
Web directories are very often overlooked by webmasters as many of them deliver only little traffic.But link directories offer benefits to webmasters as they can attact more visitors.

Well, directory is much more specialized connection of site, you can get a lot more ideas about the similar website by looking at the directory. Search engine might not be that effective at this..
