I seems that directories have been Page Ranking easier than before. Before, a directory gaining a PR5 is almost impossible. Do you think google changed something in their algo that made this possible?

I don't know! I'm still having a hard time getting to PR5! I'm stuck at Page Ranking# and it doesn't look like google has changed anything!

Nopes , people are now putting in extra efforts and money in this . Page Ranking for directories is mainly because of backlinks and if you can buy high Pr links then Pr5 is pretty easy .
Its about promotion and money for now . I dont think google made any changes in algo regarding Page Ranking . PR isnt that important unless you are into link selling biz .

But as far as my knowledge goes, Page Ranking is also related to the frequency of googlebot crawling to your website. I mean a site with high PR are crawled frequently.

No,google makes some frequent changes .I also own a directory with PR6, which two monthes back had a Page Ranking of 4.

I do not think that Google has changed their algo but I feel that people are more willing to pay for links.
That is why I think people are getting high Page Ranking.
